It was Oscar Wilde who quipped, “Life is too important to be taken seriously.” However, it was Ludwig Bemelmans who actually lived that way. This book is centered on his travels in the decade leading up to World War II. The first chapter finds him in a Suite de Grand Luxe aboard the Normandie, the ship he refers to as the femme fatale of ocean liners. Succeeding chapters find him in Paris, in a Bavarian jail cell, and fraternizing with headhunters in South America. With fifty illustrations, also by Bemelmans.
